Obama puts his ignorance of Iraq and al Qaeda on the record

Obama's op-ed in the NY Times exposes most of his ignorance about the war with al Qaeda and the important part the Iraq war has played in defeating al Qaeda. He wants to seize the opportunity offered by Maliki's stated request for a withdrawal schedule. We may very well do that regardless of who is elected President this fall, but it will be done under very different circumstances than those proposed by Obama last year.

What Obama proposed would have been a true disaster as opposed to the perceived idsaster he sees the war as being. It would have given the terrorist a victory they had not earned and would have made the war against al Qaeda a much longer and more costly one. It would have been one of the most disastrous policies since the Democrats' retreat from Vietnam which led to the deaths of millions. Even Obama admitted at the time that it could lead to genocide which he saw as more acceptable than the victory we now are near.

So while he and almost everyone else opposes genocide in Darfur, in Iraq it was OK if it meant that he and the Democrats could blame President Bush for a debacle. This is political opportunism of the worst kind and he and the Democrats should have to pay a political price for being so wrong about the surge and the consequences of it. He was dead wrong and still want admit it. that is not leadership or honesty.

The belief that one can retreat their way to victory is just ignorant of history and common sense. The man seems to have skip his history courses and knows nothing of military history in particular. The greatest challenge for our military leaders, should Obama be elected, will be just communicating the consequences to Obama of Obama's ignorant strategic vision.

Peter Wehner also looks at Obama's willful ignorance about Iraq.
