McCain's job in Texas

Houston Chronicle:

Saying "I have a lot of work to do" in Texas before the March 4 primary, Sen. John McCain vowed Tuesday to campaign across the state next week in events for both votes and money.

"My job is to give the message that only a unified party can succeed in defeating the Democratic candidate," he said. "And Texas obviously is vital in that equation.

"I can't draw a scenario that a Republican can win a general election without carrying Texas."

One of McCain's biggest challenges is to become financially competitive with the Democrats, who have raised record amounts of cash.

Before his string of primary victories, McCain lagged behind not only Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama but some of his Republican primary rivals in contributions. Now, McCain is challenging Obama, the campaign's leading fundraiser, to live up to his pledge to take public financing in the fall election.

On Monday, McCain met with a number of fundraisers at the Houston home of Robert Mosbacher, who is the senator's national campaign chairman. The private meeting took place after a public event at Hobby Airport in which the senator was endorsed by former President George H.W. Bush.

Texas remains the place where Republicans go to finance their campaign and that is still an area where McCain has a lot of work. He has done too good a job of taking the money out of his own politics when it comes to running for President.
