A determined get away driver
Brenham Banner-Press:
I guess he decided he deserved the death penalty after his cumulative crimes. There is no indication he was looking for virgins after his ultimate get away. What appears to have begun as a Waller County carjacking and armed robbery Thursday night ended with a yet-unidentified perpetrator’s self-inflicted gunshot death near Chappell Hill early today, authorities say.
Trooper Ronald Tompkins attempted to halt a 2006 Chrysler automobile for a traffic violation shortly after midnight, but the driver sped away and reached speeds surpassing 100 miles an hour prior to entering Washington County on U.S. 290. The driver then turned north on Routt Road shortly before Chappell Hill.
The suicide came at the chaotic end of a high-speed chase that began with a traffic stop attempt in Waller County by a Department of Public Safety trooper.
The driver was reportedly still traveling at nearly 100 mph upon reaching Routt Road’s Riverside Plantation intersection when he lost control of the car and went airborne — striking several trees and a fence line before coming to a stop.
As two Washington County sheriff’s officers — Deputy Shane Ray and Investigator Art Senteno — arrived to assist Tompkins, the officers heard two shots fired inside the badly-wrecked vehicle.
Senteno then gave a series of commands over a patrol car intercom system, but when those went unanswered for several minutes, the officers moved in.
