Unfettered executive warmaking?
George Will has a column on a proposal by congressman Walter Jones that would attempt to make it more difficult for the commander in chief to act as the commander in chief. Will appears to favor the bad idea by a Republican Congressman who opposes the war in Iraq. He faces substantial opposition in his home district for his anti war stand and hopefully will be defeated in the primaries in 2008.
Much of this comes from the bogus fear that President Bush is going to attack Iran without authorization from congress. While the President might like Iran to think that he might do that, their is no evidence in his prior conduct that he would. He has been less likely than President Clinton was to exercise his war powers without seeking congressional approval. Besides, I think he would like to put the Democrats on the spot on the issue. That is what he did in Iraq.
