Taliban ambush brides and a child

AFP:

A TALIBAN ambush has killed two newly married women and a child in Afghanistan while 13 policemen were killed in separate attacks.

The women were travelling in a convoy to the southern city of Kandahar after their marriage to two brothers in Herat further west, Kandahar province police chief Sayed Aqa Saqib said.

Rebels opened fire with guns and rocket-propelled grenades, striking the vehicle carrying the two brides and the child, he said.

The women's father-in-law was also in the vehicle and was wounded in the attack, Mr Saqib, who said he had spoken to the man in the hospital, said.

"They were bringing the brides home,'' he said.

"There were no military convoy, military post or any military target near the blast site."

The ambush was on a main road in the Zahri district, which sees regular attacks by Taliban fighters.

The Taliban has become very inept at ambushing military forces, usually suffering catastrophic losses from the response of US and NATO forces. While they did not have to worry about that from attacking some newly wed women, the blow back from the Afghans will be just as devastating for the Taliban.
