MNFI:U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Joshua DeBoer, a crew chief with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263, mans a machine gun on the back of an MV-22B Osprey aircraft while flying over Iraq Oct. 18, 2007.
As currently configured it is the only gun on the Osprey and it is used out the rear hatch of the plane. While this may be handy if the plane is being chased, it seems awkward for dealing with a hot landing zone. This
photo shows the Osprey coming in for a landing. They have only recently been deployed to Iraq after extended testing required because of fatal crashes during early tests. I think they will be well suited for work in Afghanistan if they are ever sent there. but they need to add some forward firing capacity. Click on the image to see it in full size.
