Gen. Abizaid responds to questions about the war

Hugh Hewitt did his usual good job in interviewing the Centcom commander and the transcript is important reading in understanding what is going on the the war and who is winning. One of the questions he asks him is whether he has enough troops and, of course, he says he does. He has been saying this every since he took command back in 2003. He is probably closer to being right now than he was back then since he now has 275,000 Iraqi troops to work with. However, his discussion of the situation in Baghdad reinforces my contention of the importance of the concept of force to space in stopping an insurgency or a raiding strategy.

...

JA: The situation in Iraq right now, as you've seen, of course, there's an awful lot of sectarian violence, particularly in the Baghdad area. We've found it necessary to move additional troops down into the Baghdad area by extending some forces that we were going to redeploy to help shore up some of the work that the Iraqi Security Forces are doing. We're putting additional Iraqi Security Forces in the field there as well. It's very clear to all of us that have been serving in this region that Baghdad's the key to Iraq, and that we've got to get the levels of sectarian violence down in order for Iraq to stabilize. We're confident it can be done. We've seen some changes already that are somewhat positive. It's still too early to say, but the combination of Iraqi Security Forces and our forces, along with some measures being taken by the new government, we're confident can, over time, move Baghdad in the right direction.

The point also becomes clearer when you wade through Maj. Gen. William Caldwell's weekly briefing with its slides on the battle for Baghdad and the operations against death squads.

I still believe that if these force to space ratios had been brought to bear earlier on in the war the enemy would have enjoyed even less success.

Gateway Pundit also has coverage of the good news out of Baghdad. He also has this assessment:

** It is very strange that the New York Times poll says that 51% of Americans see no connection between Iraq and the "Terror Fight" when "well over" 100 Al Qaeda operatives were arrested in Iraq in just one week!... Explain that?!!
The poll just reflects the success of the anti war left's disinformation campaign.
