Webb win close race for Dem VA Senate race

Washington Post:

James Webb, a former Reagan administration Navy secretary who left the GOP over the war in Iraq, defeated longtime lobbyist and Democratic Party stalwart Harris N. Miller in Virginia's Democratic primary tonight, as voters chose a candidate to run against Republican Sen. George Allen in November.

In unofficial returns compiled by Virginia's State Board of Elections, Webb took 53 percent of the vote, with more than 90 percent of precincts reporting. Miller had 47 percent.

Turnout was light. Only about 3 percent of the 4.5 million registered voters in the state went to the polls to choose between Miller, 54, a former high-tech industry lobbyist, and Webb, 60, a decorated Vietnam war veteran, novelist and former Republican. The primary was open to all voters regardless of party affiliation.

...

Webb is a smart guy but his journey to the dark side by joining the democrats as an anti war candidate is not likely to be a happy one. I will be surprised if Allen does not handily defeat him. I have yet to hear him give a rational story for opposing the liberation of Iraq and the removal of a gencidal despot with ties to terrorism.
