Follow the phone to the terrorist

Telegraph:

Hussain Osman, the suspected Shepherd's Bush bomber, left London a few days ago and travelled through Europe before reaching Rome, Italian police sources said.

Investigators were put on his trail after Scotland Yard provided the mobile phone number of a relative, Italian state television reported.

...

By following traces left by the phone, police were able to track Osman, who is believed to have left a partner and two children in south London.

He was, according to police sources quoted by Italian news agencies, met by his brother, the owner of an internet cafe near Rome's Termini railway station, who was taken in for questioning last night. Giuseppe Pisanu, Italy's interior minister, said in a brief statement: "The arrest made a short while ago in Rome of the Somali Osman Hussain, a naturalised British citizen, the suspected fourth attacker on July 21 in London, is really deserving of praise."

...

Osman immediately gave himself up when police arrived at the flat, said to be owned by the relative.

Italian police in the meantime were carrying out a series of connected raids in Rome last night.

An anti-terrorist police source in Rome said: "We don't believe that Osman Hussain came to Rome to prepare an attack, but to hide here. It's clear that he was able to count on a local contact. That's what we are working on."

Mobile phone tracking is now a crucial aspect of major criminal investigations. Phone companies are increasingly switching to transmitters that cover smaller areas which enables experts to even more accurately pinpoint a phone's location.

Apparently they tracked him by the cell he was in. Some cell phones in the US have built in GPS tracking, which is helpful if you have an emergency and need assistance. It is too bad this info got out, though. Future terrorist on the run will not use cell phones.
