An extensive survey done by the Pew Foundation probed how support for the right to an abortion was affected by various circumstances and how far into the term the pregnancy was. The results showed Americans’ views on abortion are much more nuanced than just the life-choice dichotomy. To me, Pew’s survey shows most of Americans support the right to an abortion early in the pregnancy but that after about 12-15 weeks, a woman needs to have a good reason to terminate the pregnancy. Factors enjoying widespread support for an abortion later in the pregnancy include risk to the mother’s health, fetal deformity, and rape/incest.

It is interesting that there have been so few attempts to pass the restrictions as stated in the survey.
