Lockheed Martin, based in Bethesda, Maryland, has been awarded a $1 billion (£710 million) contract to design and develop a hypersonic missile that can be launched from a warplane (stock image)
The US has been testing the concept for years with limited success, but the Russian and Chinese threat of using them has renewed interest in the concept. The advanced versions of the missile are said to be able to maneuver around missile defense systems.
