Patrick defeats Dewhurst for Lt. Gov. nomination

Houston Chronicle:
State Sen. Dan Patrick, riding a wave of tea-party populism from relative obscurity as a Houston radio talk-show host to statewide prominence in just eight years, defeated incumbent David Dewhurst Tuesday to win the Republican nomination to become Texas' next lieutenant governor.

The Associated Press declared Patrick the winner just after 8 p.m.

Patrick easily outpaced Dewhurst by about the margin hinted at in pre-election polls last week.

The dramatic win, which came two months after Dewhurst came in a distant second in the March GOP primary, signaled a likely end to the career of Texas' No. 2 elected official, a multi-millionaire Houston energy businessman once seen as a likely choice to be governor.

 Republicans were reacting to Dewhurst working too closely with Democrats allowing them to kill popular legislation.  The revelations late in the campaign about Patrick's mental health issues in the 1980's appears to have backfired on those hoping to derail his campaign.  Negative campaigns don't always work in Texas, but don't be surprised if the Democrats get down and dirty.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014. When the Congressional Budget Office crunched Obamacare's spending numbers, they estimated that only 7% of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored plans would lose their plans. ...
