Wendy Davis continues her bumbling campaign with equal pay issue
San Antonio Express-News:
While the media is still trying to help her out, she keeps walking into contradictions.
For the first couple of months this year, it seemed like the Wendy Davis campaign for governor was being run by The Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight. The reporter is wrong. If he had done a little background he would have discovered that "In three significant categories, Republicans lead Democrats in closing the wage gap, hiring a greater number of females to run their office, and compensating them at a higher level than their Democrat counterparts. This is a stereotypical case of actions speaking louder than words.” -Cari Chistman, Executive Director, Red State Women "
There were the conflicting answers about whether she could support a 20-week ban on abortions; herendorsement of allowing open carry of handguns, which she then backtracked from by saying local governments should be able to opt out; and the campaign’s inability to square away her autobiography, which resulted in Wayne Slater’s blockbuster story.
Then there were the fights with the press: running over the Austin American-Statesman’s chief political writer, Jonathan Tilove, for having the *gall* write about Slater’s story; or the time when a campaign aide literally climbed up the steps on an escalator to keep Tilove from asking Davis a question; or the time when an aide interrupted a reporter who was trying to ask Davis to clarify her abortion position. And we haven’t even gotten to the Davis campaign’s decision shut out every news organization but The Texas Tribune and their live-streaming service (which, full disclosure, I donated to) from the speech where she finally rebutted the Republican attacks against her biography. To say that reporters were irritated, would be putting it mildly.
However, Davis’ ability to put Attorney General Greg Abbott, her Republican opponent for Governor, on the defensive over the equal pay legislation, seems to have pushed the narrative of the ‘bumbling, incompetent campaign’ into the background, at least for now.
