Dewhurst is probably still the favorite because of his money and name recognition, but Cruz may have a more energized group of voters which can make a difference in a runoff election where fewer voters general show up. Whatever the rift, either candidate should easily defeat any Democrat opponent.
Dewhurst has been the favorite in the race and probably did not expect the strong challenge he got from Ted Cruz who has hammered Dewhurst on some of the compromises he made as Lt. Governor. Some of the measures may have been popular at the time, but are no longer popular. Intraparty disputes are not new in Texas, but rarely have the divisions become as heated as they have between supporters of Republican Senate candidates David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz.
