Mattis, Caldwell possible replacements for McChrystal

The White House is actively considering how a successor could be swiftly confirmed by the United States Senate, according to a senior congressional source.

The US commander in Afghanistan was ordered to fly back from Kabul for a carpeting after he and his aides were quoted in "Rolling Stone" magazine mocking the president and senior officials.

The Capitol Hill official said that General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato's Training Mission in Afghanistan, were being discussed as possible replacements.

However, it remained to be seen whether Mr Obama would accept the resignation.

I think either of the two mentioned could do a good job if McChrystal is relieved. Mattis worked with Petraeus in writing the new counterinsurgency manual so he should be comfortable with the strategy and the chain of command. Caldwell has experience in dealing with the media and might be able to better handle the PR battle with the Taliban.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.

Apple's huge investment in US including Texas facility

Blaze: Apple announced a $500 billion commitment to infrastructure in the United States over four years, its largest commitment to domestic spending to date. Apple said it will expand teams and facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Washington as part of its new spending. With a new facility in Houston, Texas, Apple will reportedly double its investment in advanced manufacturing along with increasing investments in AI and silicon engineering. The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.
