New terror alerts in India, UK

India put its airports and national carriers on high security alert on Friday following intelligence reports that Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LT) has acquired 50 paragliding kits and is plotting to hijack an Indian plane.

Indian Home Ministry sources said they had received “credible intelligence” that LT operatives were receiving training in paragliding allegedly with the help of Pakistani forces.

A report in The Indian Express newspaper, confirmed by aviation spokeswoman Moushumi Chakravarty, said intelligence officials had uncovered a plot by militants linked to Al Qaeda and the LT to hijack an Indian flight destined for a neighbouring country.

The BBC reports a raised threat level in the UK:

The UK terror threat level is being raised from "substantial" to "severe", Home Secretary Alan Johnson has said.

The new alert level means a terrorist attack is considered "highly likely". It had stood at substantial since July.

It is in response to the perceived increased threat from international terrorism following the failed Detroit airliner bombing on Christmas Day.

Mr Johnson stressed there was no intelligence to suggest a terrorist attack was imminent.

The decision to raise the threat level was made by the UK's Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC).

While the two may be related the UK statement tying it to the underwear bomber suggest they perceive a threat coming from Yemen. Earlier reports suggest that 20 or more UK Muslims had gone to Yemen to be trained for the underwear operations. This week the UK stopped all direct flights from Yemen.
