Pakistan's sovereignty lie
CNN:
Pakistan needs to stop making these ridiculous claims that the US is violating their sovereignty since it is clear that the US has no desire to occupy Pakistan. It is also clear that the Taliban and al Qaeda both have a desire to occupy Pakistan and are a direct threat to the Pakistan government. The US is not a threat to that government, but if Pakistan foolishly decides to take up arms against the US it may become a threat.
This report of an attack on an Islamabad hotel where 40 were killed demonstrates how ridiculous Pakistan's sovereignty argument is. That attack clearly was not done by the US, but by the very forces we are trying to defeat. By protecting the enemy forces Pakistan only makes it easier for them to attack Pakistan. Ignoring them hoping they will attack you last is a losing strategy. A photo of the blast shows a very large explosion.
This report from India suggest that CIA officers were the target of the blast. CNN reports that most of the casualties were drivers waiting for their cars and hotel staff and security guards. The story does indicate the hotel is near the diplomatic area of the city. See where the explosion went off »
The NY Times reports that the US embassy is trying to assess whether there were any US casualties. The Times says the bombing may have been timed for President Asif Ali Zardari's first address to Parliament since his election two weeks ago.
Pakistan will not allow foreign powers to violate the country's sovereignty to pursue terrorists, the country's new president, Asif Ali Zardari, said Saturday. This is an obvious lie. Pakistan has permitted al Qaeda to violate its sovereignty for years and has done little to stop it. It permits the Taliban to use Pakistan as a base for violating the sovereignty of Afghanistan. By permitting those two to operate in its territory it becomes responsible for their conduct and it may find itself at war with those that al Qaeda and the Taliban are making war on."We will not tolerate the violation of our sovereignty and territorial integrity by any power in the name of combating terrorism," he said in his first speech to Parliament since taking the presidential oath this month.
The president's comments echo those of Gen. Parvez Kayani, Pakistan's military chief, who said recently that the country would not allow foreign forces to conduct operations inside Pakistan.
