Survey USA has bad news for Strayhorn in Texas Governor's race
Paul Burka, former Daily Texas Sports Editor, and long time Texas Monthly writer takes a look at the numbers.
BTW, I was Sports Editor of the Daily Texan the semester after Burka. Both semesters were more than 40 years ago.
Perry Going Nowhere at 35%, But That May Be Just Enough To Win Re-Election. That's SurveyUSA's headline for its first poll of the governor's race since June 26. The methodology involved interviews of 1,000 adults over a three-day period (September 16-18), 863 of whom were registered voters. From that pool, 536 likely voters were identified for the poll.Paul has more analysis of the numbers, but it is not clear to me whether the brake down given is from the likely voter pool or one of the others. This chart does indicate the break down is likely voters. While critics can make fun of Perry's number, in most races a 12% lead would look pretty good.
The results:
Perry 35%
Bell 23%
Friedman 23%
Strayhorn 15%
Anyone looking at these numbers would have to conclude that Strayhorn is dead. The polling occurred after her TV spots had been running for more than a week, and they didn't change a thing. Perry's TV spot didn't give him a boost either, but he didn't need one....
