Dems already playing games with next nominee

MSNBC:

President Bush’s nominee to the Supreme Court to replace Sandra Day O’Connor appeared to be skating on thin ice Wednesday, even though the president hasn’t yet revealed who the nominee is.

In the war of nerves leading up to Bush's announcement of his next high court nominee, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and other Democrats were signaling Wednesday that the filibuster — extended debate in order to kill a nomination — is an option they might use.

It appears that Pat Leahy is the designated guy to act as the "voice of reason" with Bush on the next nominee while people like Reid and others in the leadership pander to the wacky base of the Democrat Party by voting against a guy they know is qualified. It will be Leahy's job to try to influence the next Bush choice. I think if they filibuster a choice that passes muster witht he Republicans on the Gang of 14, then a procedural vote will take place to ban filibusters on judicial nominees. All Bush really has to do is select someone that five of those seven will sign off on. The Democrats will then have overplayed their weak hand again and they will have even less influence on the selection of judges.
