Aussies got intercept that led to Hambali's arrest
Australia's Defense Signal Directorate captured a phone call made by an accomplice of Hambali that led to his arrest.
"...The August arrest of the Bali bomber Hambali in Thailand was the result of a DSD tip-off to the Thai police and US authorities, one source said.
"...Others have confirmed that DSD, with Australian Federal Police in Indonesia, helped track the mobile phone calls of Bali bomber Imam Samudra, who was arrested last November.
"DSD intercepts electronic signals with the help of several bases in Australia, including one near Geraldton in West Australia, Pine Gap near Alice Springs and Shoalhaven near Darwin.
"The intercepted messages are then translated, and often analysed by the Defence Intelligence Organisation, before being passed on to government officials.
"'Another Bali conspirator - I think it was Amrozi - provided phone numbers to police after he was arrested,' the intelligence source said. 'DSD was able to intercept calls made from the phones. The locations were passed on to the AFP who passed them on to the Indonesians, and Samudra was arrested trying to cross from Merak in Java to Sumatra.'"
