The low death toll
John Podhoretz:
"...The death toll among American soldiers remains startlingly and hearteningly low, not horribly and frighteningly high.
"Before the war, everybody believed that the number of American troops killed would vastly exceed the toll in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Some retired generals unhappy with the battle plan, most notoriously Barry McCaffrey, suggested there could be 3,000 Americans killed in combat.
"That seemed hyperbolic when McCaffrey said it. But even those who supported the war expected some conventional ground battles of the sort seen in every war in which territory is fought over and seized. And such ground battles, of necessity, cause combat deaths in some numbers even when one side wins them overwhelmingly."
But any number of casualties is enough to rout the Dems who did not want to liberate Iraq.
