Japan has been a good ally in post 9-11 world
Japan says the US is its only ally.
"...The defense minister, Shigeru Ishiba, said in an interview that Japan's commitment to send troops to Iraq would strengthen its alliance with the United States, even as Japan faced challenges closer to home: North Korea, possibly armed with nuclear weapons, and China, the rising power that has been rapidly increasing its military spending.
"'The U.S. is the only country that promises to defend Japan in a reliable way, by a treaty,' he said. 'Japan does not belong to a collective defense organization like NATO, nor has it concluded a security treaty with China or Russia. The country that would defend Japan at the time of crisis is Japan's only ally, the U.S.'
"...'the U.S. presence is extremely important. In that sense, to continue to strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance is important not only for Japan but also Asia.'
"Unlike some of America's traditional allies, the Japanese government's support of the war in Iraq has been unwavering.
