Russians fleeing mobilization

 NY Times:

Russians Fleeing the Draft Find an Unlikely Haven

  • Many Russians have long scorned Kyrgyzstan as a poor neighbor to the south that provided their country with cheap labor. Now, it has become their sanctuary.
  • The mass emigration of relatively wealthy Russians to Central Asia has increased rents and filled up hostels, but so far, Kyrgyzstan remains welcoming.

This tells you something about how unpopular Putin’s war in Ukraine has become.  The anti-war fervor within Russia is hard to ignore.  The attack on Ukraine never made much sense.  That country was never a threat to Russia.  I suspect Putin has been shocked at how difficult his war has become.
