Wesley Hunt considers running again for Congressional seat from Texas
Wesley Hunt, a former Army helicopter pilot and Republican nominee for Congress, said Monday he plans to run for a congressional seat in the greater Houston area again next year.
Hunt lost by about 3 percentage points in 2020 to U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, a Democrat who represents the Energy Corridor and parts of west Houston. He announced his 2022 bid during an appearance on Fox News.
With the shape of Texas’ next political maps still uncertain, Hunt told the Chronicle he is waiting for lawmakers to redraw congressional district boundaries before settling on a district. He said he is eyeing a repeat bid for Fletcher’s 7th Congressional District or one of the two new seats Texas is set to gain by the midterm elections. It’s not clear yet whether one of those new districts will be drawn in Houston or elsewhere.
The Legislature cannot draw up new political maps until lawmakers receive detailed population data from the 2020 census, which will arrive by Sept. 30, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The bureau announced in April that Texas would gain two congressional seats, more than any other state in the country, after adding 3.9 million residents over the last decade.
Last year, Hunt sought to unseat Fletcher by tying her to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and arguing that her record on energy policy ran counter to the interests of her many constituents who work in the energy industry. He was backed early in the campaign by former president Donald Trump, who ended up losing the district by more than 8 points to then-candidate Joe Biden.
Fletcher, a former oil and gas attorney, touted her opposition to measures like the Green New Deal, an offshore drilling ban and hydraulic fracking.

Hunt is black but had strong support among whites in his 2020 campaign. It is not clear to me why this district voted for someone who supports Nancy Pelosi and the anti-energy left. The Biden administration is hostile to the energy industry and jobs. While Fletcher appears to be against some of the more radical policies of the Democrats, her vote for Pelosi should be disqualifying.
