What the single attack demonstrated was Taliban bad faith. If they were to be a peace partner they would not be killing people on the eve of negotiating directly with the President. What jarred many Afghans was how a single attack and the death of one American, cited by Mr. Trump, could have upended 10 months of negotiations.
