Veteran south Texas Congressman Solomon Ortiz conceded defeat overnight in the hotly contested 27th District race, giving another victory to Tea Party-backed Republicans.

Republicans gained at least 62 House seats in the November election and will have a majority when the new Congress convenes in January.

"I just accepted a phone call from Congressman Ortiz," Blake Farenthold said late last night. "He called to congratulate me, and promised to work with me for the good of everyone in south Texas."

Farenthold won by 800 votes. Ortiz had been in office for nearly 30 years. This is a majority Hispanic district.
