Senate committee also approves more F-22s

The Hill:

The Senate Armed Services Committee has agreed to authorize funding for seven more Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor jets, setting the stage for an intense clash with the Obama administration, which no longer wants the planes.

The Armed Services panel finished its closed-door deliberations Thursday afternoon and is set to announce shortly its recommendations on the 2010 defense authorization bill. According to congressional and industry sources, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), one of the strongest backers of the F-22, which is built in his state, scored an initial — if narrow — victory by getting the committee's nod to authorize funding for seven F-22s.

Whether there are enough votes in the House and Senate to override the promised veto is another question. I don't think it is the seven planes so much as keeping the production lines open so that future orders could be made. This is just another of several questionable cuts in military spending by the Obama administration.
