Majority of MPs absent from Ahmadinejab victory bash

BBC:

More than 180 Iranian MPs appear to have snubbed an invitation to celebrate President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's election win, local press reports say.

All 290 MPs were invited to the victory party on Wednesday night, but only 105 turned up, the reports say.

A BBC correspondent says the move is a sign of the deep split at the top of Iran after disputed presidential polls.

While it is a political embarrassment for Ahmadinejad, it is essentially meaningless when it comes to power. Both the MPs and Ahmadinejad are products of a phony democracy that gives elected officials about as much power as a high school student counsel. Still any insult to the despots and religious bigots is worth noting. While they can order forces to suppress the opposition they can't command attendance at a celebration many would rather not celebrate.
