Democrats angry about Cheney's views on Gitmo
Politico:
Closing Gitmo is a gift to our enemies as is the dropping of enhance interrogation techniques. Both moves are real screw ups that will make us less safe and the war against last much longer.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s warnings about the risks of closing Guantanamo Bay prison and changing other Bush-era policies this week angered Democrats and some top counter-terrorism experts, who said Cheney was reviving the same scare tactics voters had rejected in electing Barack Obama.Obama's position is demonstrably wrong. We were attacked repeatedly up to and including 9-11 when the tactics were not in use and we have not been attacked in the homeland since. Our defending our self is not responsible for the Islamic religious bigotry that is the driving force behind the enemy actions. That is entirely self generated. There is no codependency relationship responsible for their mass murder for Allah campaign.
Cheney made his comments in an interview this week with Politico in which he unyieldingly defended the detention facility and coercive interrogations of terrorism suspects — and warned that changing course would invite another mass-casualty terror attack potentially worse than the ones on Sept. 11.
Many experts, even those who disagree sharply on most issues with Cheney, concur that a large-scale unconventional attack remains the most dangerous national security threat, if not necessarily the most likely. Obama himself has warned of such a catastrophic attack.
But Cheney’s comments revived a debate that will long outlast the presidential campaign — over what are the best tactics to prevent another attack, and whether the U.S. is more or less safe with Guantanamo open, by using harsh interrogation techniques and other controversial steps that Mr. Obama has taken steps to terminate.

James Carafano, a homeland security expert at the Heritage Foundation, argued that Cheney was right to emphasize the dangers of future attacks. He argued that keeping in place many of the most controversial elements of the Bush administration’s counterterrorist tactics was vital to prevent future attacks.
“If you actually start to unravel some of these things, then you are going to create new vulnerabilities,” he said.
Obama’s argument is that such tactics make the country less safe by inciting anti-U.S. feeling among Arabs and Muslims. What is needed, administration aides say, is more attention on stabilizing Afghanistan and on eliminating Al Qaeda havens in Pakistan, which he has promised to carry out.

Although I do not have Merv's glowing background in these matters I do have considerable international experience "in the field". I have lived in the Middle East, Africa and Europe for many years and speak several languages. Hence, my information comes from a variety of reliable sources "in the trenches" so to speak. I disagree with your comments that closing Gitmo is a "gift" to the terrorists. This is considered laughable by people in the know. Getting rid of Bush and Cheney is the REAL gift. The American public has been seriously shortchanged when it comes to responsible information on this subject, among others. They have been deliberately misled and lied to repeatedly. Maintaining high levels of fear among the public is in the INTERESTS of government madmen like Bush and Cheney. They WANT us to be scared so we'll give up our freedom in stupid efforts like the amazingly ridiculous Patriot Act! Patriot? My foot! What ever happened to those red, orange and yellow levels of "terrorist threat" that we were bombarded with for 18 months after 9-11? The CIA and FBI were notorious for decades for their lack of sharing information; their ineptitudes and political kowtowing. 9-11 would not have happened if these folks had been on the ball (or would have been PERMITTED to be on the ball by those in charge!). Our government behaved like the Keystone cops (as with Katrina). This sort of attack (9-11)was considered inevitable for many, many years prior to its occurance but the government would not take it seriously. Bush himself had written information suggesting an attack of this very kind one week or more BEFORE it happened! It's like the Katrina fiasco: THEY KNEW! However,it was a "convenience" for our government that had LONG been plotting an attack on Iraq - what a handy excuse 9-11 would be...... So place the blame where it belongs - on corporate America and the Bush Administration. Gitmo doesn't "scare" terrorists. People willing to sacrifice their lives in the name of a cause are hardly daunted by Gitmo. The REAL reason we were not attacked again after 9-11 is PURE LUCK. If these guys had wanted to attack America you can be certain they would have - Gitmo or not. Cheney was far more interested in appearing to be a tough guy in order to HIDE that he was accepting favors and doling out extremely lucrative no-bid contracts to his buddies at Haliburten than PREVENTING 9-11. In hindsight they all run for cover behind an unbelieveable number of distortions and outright lies that are purposely inundating the airwives by corporate owned media. The Wolfowitz Doctrine lay behind much of the madness of the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld Troika. These folks are technically Fascists whether people truly understand what a Fascist is or not. The obsessed military / government / corporate power we have witnessed for 8 years has almost destroyed our nation. The staunch imperialist aims of the Wolfowitz Doctrine and sorely misguided religious (Christian)pronouncements led us into these terrorist issues far deeper than the fools running the government ever understood. The American government behaved like gleeful bullies chasing simple nomads on camels with taxpayer high tech equipment that couldn't even FIND Osama bin Laden let alone stop or destroy Al Queda. How can this possibly be? Americans are the laughing stock of the rest of the world for our stupidity and greed. So hold on to your high minded, self-righteous horses here and learn a bit more about what really is going on out there. The American public is becoming harder and harder to fool.
