Hamas agrees to one week ceasefire

Fox News:

Hamas and other Palestinian factions in Gaza say they will give Israel a one-week ceasefire starting Sunday.

An Islamic Jihad official in Gaza confirmed in a phone call to FOX News that Hamas and all the Palestinian factions have agreed on a cease-fire. Hamas is giving Israel one week to pull out the troops out of Gaza.

A senior Hamas official also said the group's wing in Syria agreed to a weeklong cease-fire.

Hamas' Syrian-based deputy leader, speaking for the militant Palestinian factions, said on Syrian television that the cease-fire will give Israel time to withdraw and open all the border crossings to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The Jerusalem Post notes:

T

he two cease-fires do not appear to be coordinated with each other, and have contradicting demands. While Israel said it would halt all military activity, it said it would maintain its presence in Gaza until it was clear that Palestinian gunmen would honor the calm.

In addition, Israel said it would not open any border crossings until all hostilities have ceased.

Shortly after the Hamas declaration, the spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office reaffirmed Israel's position and expressed hope that the calm would be maintained for the long-term.

"If in fact we see a cessation of Hamas activity towards Israel, then we could see a long-term ceasefire," Mark Regev told Sky News.

He added that Israel "clearly does not want to" stay in Gaza, and that Israel would do everything it could to maintain the calm.

Meanwhile Egypt is hosting a conference trying to rationalize the conflicting ceasefires and try to make them more permanent. Israel expects Hamas to revert to terror attacks to try to regain its mojo. Israeli intelligence expects a return to Hamas arms smuggling within months. Apparently the Hamas attacks have had traumatizing impact on some Israeli chickens.

  1. Israel unilaterally declared a ceasefire yesterday. Of course it quickly vanished when Hamas fired five rockets into Israel. Hamas does not want to cease fire unless it is on their therms. They are concerned about looking defeated in the eyes of the Arab world. In truth, they have been defeated from a military standpoint. The vanishing Israeli cease fire
