Taliban make desperate attack against Afghan intelligence office
Their target was the deputy intelligence director, but it is not clear whether he was one of the intelligence officers killed. The attack suggest that we are getting enough intelligence on their activities to concern the Taliban, but not enough to prepare for some of their attacks. It also appears that the Afghans need better barrier security to protect against car bomb attacks.Suicide bombers blew up two car bombs at the provincial office of the National Directorate of Security in the south eastern city of Khost, while at least one other fighter dressed in police uniform tried to storm the offices.
A total of six police, two intelligence officers and three civilians were killed in the attack, according to Tahir Khan Sabari, deputy provincial governor.
One car bomb exploded at the gates of the intelligence office while another detonated soon afterwards a couple of hundred metres away.
Another bomber wearing police uniform unsuccessfully tried to shoot his way into the nearby counter narcotics office, killing several police and civilians when his explosives detonated in the ensuing firefight.
US forces were called in to evacuate casualties from the attack.
Mr Khan Sabari said police were still looking for other militants who may have entered the office disguised as police.
He said: "Police are searching for more attackers but we are not sure if there are any other attackers in the area."
