Hamas continues to fire rockets at noncombatants

NY Times:

Israeli airstrikes against Hamas facilities in Gaza continued for a second day on Sunday and the death toll rose to more than 280 as Israel retaliated for rocket fire from the area with its most severe campaign against Palestinian militants in decades.

The Palestinian groups again launched barrages of rockets and mortars into Israel on Sunday, extending their reach further than ever before, and the Israeli government approved the emergency call up of thousands of army reservists in preparation for a possible ground operation.

Speaking before the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the army “will deepen and broaden its actions as needed” and “will continue to act in Gaza.”

Among the 30 or more targets hit Saturday night and early Sunday was the main security compound and prison in Gaza City known as the Saraya; metal workshops throughout Gaza; Hamas military posts; and the house of a chemistry professor from Gaza’s Islamic University. The Hamas-owned Al-Aqsa television station was also struck, as was a mosque that the Israeli military said was housing armed men and was being used as a terrorist operation center.

Palestinian officials said that most of the dead in Gaza were security officers for Hamas, including two senior commanders, and that at least 600 people had been wounded in the attacks.

From the photos selected for publications in some of the media (not the Times) you would think that the Israelis were making war against Palestinian children. This constant distortion in favor of Palestinian propaganda and their victim offensive is getting old. Israel carefully targeted Hamas infrastructure and command and control areas and appears to have been largely successful.

The major success of the Palestinians has been in getting the images of wounded children in the media. They did kill one Israeli noncombatant with a rocket attack. They have attempted to kill many more by firing rockets into areas populated with non combatants.

I think there may still be an IDF invasion of Gaza to capture and destroy the rockets that remain and also to find and destroy the facilities that make them. The Israelis will also attempt to find their kidnapped soldier.

These operations should substantially weaken the Hamas death cult. The Fatah Palestinians seem eager to jump back into a leadership role. As incompetent as Fatah may be, they have avoided leading their people into this kind of disaster.

The BBC has a good map of the Gaza area.

  2. How is it that the media ignores the fact that the Hamas militants started this with their relentless rocket barrages? How is it that those communities in the arab nations can condone Hamas behavior and yet vilify the Israelis' for retaliation? How is it that that arab nations always react violently to percieved slights (remember the Mohammad cartoon) yet stand by and cheer when atrocities are committed? (burning of american soldiers in Iraq). There is something seriously out of whack in the Psyche of a community that can ignore and condone such thing. Good for Israel for standing up for herself. What else can you do against Bully's?
