Sharp to run for Texas senate seat

Former Comptroller John Sharp, a Democrat, said today that he will run for the U.S. Senate seat expected to be vacated next year by Republican Kay Bailey HutchisonSharp has lost his last two statewide races for lieutenant governor. State Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, is the only Republican to announce so far, but I have seen indications of at least one member of the Texas Railroad Commission who might run. At this point the eventual Republican nominee should still be favored.Hutchison last week designated a campaign treasurer to begin raising money for an anticipated race for governor in 2010 and is expected to resign from the Senate in mid-term.
``I will be a candidate whether the election is in 2012 or any time before then,'' Sharp said. ``Texans face tough challenges that call for innovative solutions, and that's what our campaign is all about.''
