Marine Corps jet crashes in San Diego

San Diego Union Tribune:

Delivering the mail in the 4400 block of Cather Avenue Monday, Bill Dusting heard a loud “pop! pop!” His first thought – that the sounds were gunshots – was worrisome.

The reality, though, was terrifying.

That sound? A pilot ejecting from an out-of-control Marine Corps jet that was headed straight for the 48-year-old mailman.

“I looked up and saw the plane,” said Dusting, an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service. “It was unreal. Except this was real.”

Dusting dashed to his right and was still running and staring over his shoulder when the F/A-18D slammed onto Cather Avenue about two houses away.

Dusting called 911, then decided that the rest of his mail route could wait. He wanted to get out of the way of ambulances, fire engines and looky-loos.

...

The crashed jet did deter him from the swift completion of his appointed rounds. Three people were killed in a house hit by debris from the crashed plane. The pilot who ejected only moments before his F-18 crashed was found in a nearby canyon. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The North County Times has more on the crash including some video from a local TV station.
