The auto work force

Opinion Journal has a lengthy discussion on the 12 auto companies that a "foreign owned" building cars in the US. This paragraph was striking:

These are the 12 "foreign," or so-called transplant, producers making cars across America's South and Midwest. Toyota, BMW, Kia and others now make 54% of the cars Americans buy. The internationals also employ some 113,000 Americans, compared with 239,000 at U.S.-owned carmakers, and several times that number indirectly.

Did you catch the fact that they make more than half the cars in the US with half as many workers? No wonder they are more efficient and have lower labor cost. The article goes on to compare the cost per worker where the foreign makers still have an advantage, but if they are only having to pay half as many workers that advantage grows significantly.
