New Orleans family business--Murders R Us

NOLA:

At about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, New Orleans police responded to a shooting in St. Roch.

Less than 12 hours later, they would respond to another shooting across town in the Irish Channel.

By the end of the day, two New Orleans men, brothers suspected in 14 murders during the past few years, were themselves killed. Their deaths marked the fifth and sixth killings in New Orleans in five days.

Wednesday morning police found a 29-year-old man shot to death in the St. Roch neighborhood.

The shooting took place before 10:15 a.m. near North Dorgenois and Painter streets, said officer Shereese Harper. Officers found the man inside a sedan with several gunshot wounds to his body. He was dead at the scene, police said.

He was later identified as Demond Phillips, 29, of New Orleans, said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner. Phillips died from a gunshot wound to his neck.

About 10 hours later, police responded to a call of gunfire near Livaudais and Sixth streets in the Irish Channel.

Sixth District officers found Michael Phillips, 27, in his Ford Taurus, with gunshot wounds to the torso.

He died at the scene.

The Phillips brothers are the 116th and 117th homicide victims in the city this year.

According to detectives, Demond Phillips had been linked to and arrested in eight murders in New Orleans, Sgt. Joe Narcisse said.

Narcisse said there was a $1 million court warrant issued for Demond Phillips' arrest after he fled the criminal courthouse during a hearing Jan. 8.

Michael Phillips was linked to and arrested in connection with six murders, officer Jonette Williams said.

While the brothers' murders happened in such a short time frame, Williams said it's too early to tell whether they were related.

Narcisse said that with both brothers dead, police hope that people with information about the murders they commited will come forward to help close those cases.

Ironically the story does not have a similar request for people with information on the Phillips brothers murders.
