Changing minds on the war

NY Times:

American support for the initial invasion of Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until General David Petraeus files his report in the fall.

In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said that taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq.

Support had been at all time low in May, when only 35 percent of Americans said the United States’ invasion of Iraq was the right thing and 61 percent said the United States should have stayed out.

Still, the latest poll made clear that a two-thirds majority of Americans continue to say the war is going badly. But the number of people who say the war is going “very badly” has fallen from 45 percent earlier in July to a current reading of 35 percent, and of those who say it is going well, 29 percent now describe it as “somewhat well” compared to 23 percent just last week.

...

The best news in this report is not so much the rise in support for the war, but how many peoples opinions are based on a false sense of how the war is going. As the news of the success of the surge seeps out there is a good chance that support will recover. Wars are lost when people feel the cause is hopeless.

What the military must do, besides defeating the enemy in Iraq is persuade the people back home that we are in fact defeating the enemy in Iraq. Ironically two of the most upbeat reporters in recent days have been the NY Times' Michael Gordon and John Burns. Both of these guys are straight shooters and if things were not going well they would say so and have said so in the past. You can tell those who want to lose by how angry they get when good news is reported.

Several generals have had upbeat news briefings of late including Gen. Petraeus and Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch. We need more such reports to turn the situation around at home to give them the time they need to finish their mission.
