Hillary and Rudy
Heading Right:
If the Democrats hoped to keep their midterm momentum going for a blockbuster 2008 election cycle, the Los Angeles Times has a lot of bad news in its latest polling. Not only have the Democrats failed to keep their momentum, they have actually managed to become less popular than George Bush, at least in Congress. Their leading contender for the White House also struggles against leading Republican candidates....Someone needs to do a study on why generic candidates are favored over real Democrats. It must have something to do with the tendency toward magical thinking by many Democrats. In the real world they are not so popular. These results have been pretty consistent for months on the presidential race which raises real questions about the optimism of Democrats.

Seeing that she (Hillary Clinton) has a lock on the nomination at this point, Democrats will be dismayed to find her trailing in matchups with the top Republicans. Rudy Giuliani thumps her by 10 points, 49-39. McCain edges her by four, and Mitt Romney by two. Even though the generic Democrat beats the generic Republican by eight points, Clinton cannot take advantage of it. Her negatives will keep her from getting elected, as we have long predicted, unless the Republicans make the mistake of nominating someone with even higher negatives than Hillary.
