As an example of how these tribal policies can effect the war, the recent story of the SEAL who was wounded in a Taliban attack and taken in by a family of an Afghan tribe is telling. The family refused to turn him over tot he Taliban and the Taliban was wise enough to understand the tribal custom of protecting their guests. We are still learning about the strange world in which we are fighting. Hopefully we will figure it out before the enemy does.
The fighting anthropologist want us to look at the character of the tribal institutions of the people where the fighting is taking place. They may have a point. We also have to hope that our enemy continues to ignore those institutions.
