Pace set to lead Joint Chiefs

Washington Post:

President Bush intends to name Marine Gen. Peter Pace the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, officials said yesterday, replacing Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, whose term ends this autumn.

...

Pace, 59, has served as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for 3 1/2 years, helping to manage the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and furthering a reputation as a smooth political operator.

...

As Myers's deputy, Pace also has been subject to grumbling that he has avoided disagreements with Rumsfeld. But his backers say Pace has demonstrated particular skill in dealing not only with civilians at the Pentagon but also at the White House, and in managing difficult issues involving long-term strategy and weapons acquisition policies.

If confirmed by the Senate, Pace would become the first Marine to hold the chairman's job.

Why is it that the media thinks Bush should appoint people who do not like him or his agenda? It is clear from the body language of Pace and Rumsfeld that they like each other and work well together. It is good to see Marines finally get top appointments. The Marine Corps is the one service that has integrated the combined arms philosophy and that should be a plus for Pace as he works witht he other services to make them more effective at joint operations as well as planning their equipment purchases to match not just that services dream, but working with everyone else. The Air Force has been criticized lately for concentrating on air superiority fighters at a time when their are no airforces to really challenge them, meanwhile they are shutting down their ground support Warthog jets. At the same time the Army helicopter program looks vulnearable in the ground support role. But, the key to rapid victory is combining all these forces to put maximum pressure on the enemy and create dilemma's for which the enemy has no answer. The Army's new brigade alignment is an attempt to match the Marines Expeditionary Units which can quickly deploy as a package.
