Ticket to Paradise

The Arab volunteers who are eager to fight the US in Iraq will be as disappointed as the jihadies who rushed to Afghanistan when that war began. There are several reasons why a human bomb campaign will not save Saddam. The human bombers in Isreal do not attack military targets because they are so difficult to hit. Almost all the human bomb attacks in Isreal are in civilian areas aimed at school kids and elderly people. For those who think the bombing of the Marine's in Lebanon is instructive, they are wrong. Those Marines were not in a combat role. The Reagan Administration was also not willing to launch a war against terror. The US is already in one now. The general in charge of the troops who were killed in the car bomb attack in Iraq has issued orders that all vehicles are to turn around immiediately. If they fail to do so in five seconds, the instructions are to destroy the vehicle and the people in it. That should buy the "martyr" his ticket to paradise without US casualties. As long as the US is in a combat role, it is unlikely that such attacks will work. This rush of rats to a sinking ship will only reduce the number of attacks on Isreal. It will not effect the out come of the war to liberate Iraq.

Emotional Immaturity

The emotional reaction of the "Arab Street" to Saddam's destruction is not surprising. Most of the Islamic clerics who produce their weekly demogue at what passes for "prayer" services, are extremely emotionally immature. Because their reaction is emotion based, it is difficult to have a logical conversation with them. The best thing to do is just win. While they may never admit they were wrong, they will shut up when liberated Iraqis start telling their emotional stories of Saddam's evil empire.

Some have described this extreme emotional reaction to the liberation of Iraq, as an expression of the impotence of the Arab people. Militarily, they certainly are impotent. A rational person in such circumstances would not provoke the country with the strogest military force in the world. Saddam had plenty of opportunities to avoid his destruction. The "Arab Street" would be wise to avoid further provocation. That also goes for a country like Syria. If that country fears that it will be the next target of US force, one way to make it a self fulfilling prophecy is to attempt to come to the aid of Saddam's doomed regime or to give transit and assistance to those who would. Any act against the US forces would lead to a response by a very lethal force that is already in the neighborhood, and no UN debate would save them from US retalliation in defence of its forces. Since the leadership of Syria shows signs of occasionally acting out of emotion, and not logic, it is possible that the regime in Syria may also become suicidal.
