A Reminder to the media that the segregationists were all Democrats

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) got wind of the news of Hunt’s flub, and took to the Twitter machine to provide a quick but necessary history lesson:
A history lesson is warranted: Senators James Eastland and Herman Talmadge were *Democrats*—as were other segregationists. @JoeBiden & them have nothing to do with “bipartisanship,” so please leave GOP out of Democrats’ debates about their party’s troubled history on race.



Hunt later issued a correction, but it was long after the segment was over....

What this episode demonstrates is that some in the media reflexively try to label Republicans as racists and forget about the fact that racism was rooted in the Democrat party while Republicans were the party against slavery and for civil rights.  Those same Democrats had no interest in bipartisanship when it came to civil rights.

This history also popped up when Democrats had their hearing on "reparations for descendants of slaves" and several black speakers reminded them that the Democrats were the party of slavery and Jim Crow.

BTW, MSNBC was not the only media outlet to make the same mistake.
Appearing Thursday on CNN Newsroom, New York Times national political reporter Astead Herndon falsely labeled segregationist Democrat senators whom former Vice President Joe Biden praised for their “civility” Republicans.
