Interviews and newly obtained documents provide the Pentagon’s first public on-the-ground accounting of one of the bloodiest battles the military has faced in Syria since deploying to fight ISIS.
The mercenaries were hoping to capitalize on a deal from Syria Assad for a piece of the action in the oil field they tried to capture in a zone protected by the US.  The US operation was mostly an air attack and some of the most damage was done by a gunship supporting special operations troops.
