Democrats thought they could win with a message of outrage about Trump, now find themselves the target

NY Times:

Trump’s Summer Campaign Priority: Target Red-State Democratic Senators

The strategy, meant to take advantage of President Trump’s star power among core Republican supporters, will take him to six states where he can bring a message devised to stoke partisan outrage.
The resistance outrage machine is facing well deserved backfire from Trump and his supporters.  They have tried to obstruct the Trump agenda despite its obvious success at turning around the economy and creating jobs.  Now Democrats try to ignore that and continue to make personal attacks on the President.

Having failed with their Russian collusion narrative they have moved on to "obstruction of justice" as their latest excuse for a coup attempt.  Trump does not have to "stoke partisan outrage."  The Democrats have done a pretty good job of doing that on their own.
