Erdogan demonstrates his inner despot and looks for leaders with similar leanings

West Fears Shift in Alliance as Erdogan Reaches Out to Putin

Amid Turkey’s rising tensions with the West, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir V. Putin, to repair relations after nine months of open antagonism.
It is unlikely to last since Putin is not an Islamist.  Erdogan has been a terrible ally in the war against radical Islam and has generally sided with such people as the Hamas death cult whose leadership moved from Syria to Turkey.  When he finally decided to fight ISIL he used it as an excuse to attack the Kurds who were fighting ISIL.

He is now using the coup attempt as a means to destroy what is left of Turkish democracy and to jail those who disagree with him.  The US needs to start looking for another base in the region.
