Tips for staying warm and keeping the heating bill down

Fuel Fix has a click through picture guide.  I think the best one is turning the ceiling fan on to push the warm air back down and recirculate it.  I have a center court area in my house with a 20 foot ceiling and turning on the fan in that area can raise the temperature in the house by three or four degrees.  If you turn the central air fan on it will recirculate this warm air through the house.

Fire places are very inefficient and tend to send warm air up the chimney.  A steel fully enclosed wood stove will radiate warmth.  I have one that heats the entire house and I have to be careful not to put too much wood in it or we have to open the doors to let some of the hot air escape.  After I get the fire started, I find I only have to add one or two logs at a time the rest of the day.

With the damage the drought did in this part of Texas I have several dead water oaks that I have been turning into firewood so the wood only cost my lumber jacking efforts.  I have probably used the stove more this winter than any so far.  With several days of very cold weather, the stove is really paying for itself.
