Keystone a win-win deal for Republicans
Kenneth Green:
In the ongoing saga that is the “payroll tax extension,” Republicans have successfully incorporated a demand that President Obama fish or cut bait on the Keystone XL pipeline within 60 days. At this point, the issue has become almost completely political: Republicans see a win for them whether the president approves or kills the pipeline. If he approves it, Republicans can claim to have delivered on greater “domestic” energy production, greater energy security, jobs, tax revenues, etc. If the president kills the pipeline, Republicans will add it to the long list of anti-fossil fuel activities that the administration has conducted which have jacked up (and will continue to jack up) the cost of both electricity and motor fuels....The Republicans are right. In addition if Obama kills the deal, the Canadians will sell the oil to China making the Obama decision a strategic debacle for the US and giving the GOP more ammunition to use against him. The voters support the Keystone pipeline by 60 percent.
