Austin Tea Party draws a crowd

Austin American Statesman:

Rock anthems like “We’re not gonna take it” and “Takin’ care of business” swirled with chants for “states’ rights” as an estimated 1,000 or more Texans protested stimulus spending, taxes and Wall Street bailouts.

The first of Austin’s tax day tea parties — the “Don’t Mess with Texas Tea Party” — drew at least twice the number of expected people, said organizers, who estimated the crowd at 1,500. Austin police said they estimated the number at around 1,000.

“This is the largest display of public sentiment in decades,” said Mark Loeffler, 40, an Austin native. “I’ve never spent my way out of debt. The free market can recover if we believe in capitalism.”

“Since the Constitution was ratified, the federal government has slowly but surely eroded states’ rights,” said Gov. Rick Perry who spoke for 15 minutes. “Cut spending, cut taxes, shrink government and reread the Constitution.”

...

Who knew there were that many non liberals in Austin. That was just one of many rallies around the state. In Washington, Texas there was an impromptu rally at the post office around closing time by people trying to get their taxes paid before the deadline. It was a somber crowd.

Update: Watching Glenn Beck and Ted Nugent at the Tea Party outside the Alamo It appears the crowd is even bigger than the one in Austin.
