Will Obama allow offshore drilling?
A U.S. agency on Friday issued a preliminary proposal to hold oil and natural gas lease sales in coastal areas where drilling had been banned.Of course before August the Democrats were all saying there was no environmentally safe way to drill off shore. Whether they can politically block it at this point is unknown, but if they do it will be an issue in 2010 and it want be one favorable to Democrats. They have already started blocking explorations in other areas and they continue their inane objections to drilling in ANWR.The draft plan from the U.S. Minerals Management Service proposes 31 energy exploration lease sales between 2010 and 2015 for areas on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf.
The agency, part of the Interior Department, will accept public comments for 60 days beginning Jan. 21. After that, it will be up to President-elect Barack Obama's administration to decide whether to move forward with the leasing plan, make changes, or scrap it.
The proposal includes tracts along the East Coast and off the coasts of Alaska and California.
Obama has said he supports expanding offshore drilling as a part of a comprehensive energy plan.
Ken Salazar, Obama's nominee for Interior Department Secretary, on Thursday pledged to use "a thoughtful process" in evaluating offshore drilling.
The government must ensure any plan can be carried out "in an environmentally safe way," Salazar told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
