Is Hamas ready to surrender?

Jerusalem Post:

For the first time since the beginning of the IDF military operation in the Gaza Strip, Hamas on Monday openly signaled its willingness to accept a cease-fire with Israel.

The message from Hamas was issued by its prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, who has been in hiding since the beginning of the offensive.

Haniyeh's remarks contradict fiery statements made by Hamas leaders in Syria and Lebanon.

Haniyeh said in a televised speech that Hamas would cooperate with any initiative to stop the offensive and reopen the border crossings into the Gaza Strip.

"We will deal positively with any initiative aimed at ending the offensive," he said.

However, Haniyeh said that Hamas would also continue to fight against the "occupation forces" of Israel.

"We are confident that eventually we would achieve victory and crush the aggression," he said. "The intifada must continue because the occupation is continuing to kill."

...

This sounds like double talk at best. Whenever Haniyeh talks about the occupation he is talking about Israel itself and not Gaza. He was talking about occupation when there was not one Israeli in Gaza. The Hamas strategy of firing rockets into Israel was one aimed at opening the borders. It clearly did not work and has led to the destruction of most of Hamas's assets in Gaza. If there is an opening of the border as a result of the cease fire I am sure he will claim victory, but it will be hard to call it even a Pyric victory.

He could have gotten the same deal if he had been willing to stop the rocket attacks to begin with. I am very skeptical that Hamas will honor any agreement on the rockets. At best it will say it can't control the Iranian backed Islamic Jihad that fires many of them. The fact is that He and the Hamas leadership do not have the will to stop attacks on Israel and they still want to claim they are the victims when Israel uses force to stop the attacks.
